Most skin cancers are related to both age and sun exposure. Here in Australia
we have the highest rate in the world of all types of skin cancer. A staggering
one in two Australians will develop some form of skin cancer in their lifetime.
It is important that skin cancer surgery is treated by specialists in cancer
of the skin. Skin cancer on the face or lower leg where removal can be potentially
disfiguring or healing can be problematic, are especially best treated by
a plastic surgeon. In these cases a plastic surgeon can offer specialised
techniques for removal which will minimise scarring and promote healing.
These include skin flaps, where there is a transfer of nearby skin to close
the wound after excising the skin cancer and hiding scars wherever possible
in natural skin creases. Sometimes skin grafting (taking skin from somewhere
else like the forearm or thigh) is necessary to close the excision area.
